Ancillary Task Magazine Research

I will be looking at different types of film magazines and choosing the one I like and can talk about later and design drafts of my review. I want to do one that reflects my own film but will start with different film magazines.


- Britain's best film magazine and published by Bauer Consumer Media. Looks cool to me.

Target audience: Demographic audience is B andC , from ages 18-24, males, middle and lower class.




Launched in 1997 this magazine also focuses on books and music, as well as film. Sounds like Money.
Target Audience: 25% to 45% males
Their avaerage age is 37 years old, middles and upper class.


One of the worlds best film magazines. Gives early insight into new films and has guests regulary like Peter Jackson.

Target Audience: Males and Females, 35 yeras and younger, Demograpic audience of B,C



Formed in France, based in New York City, published by Rupert Murdoch. A bit lucky I'll say.

Target Audience: Male and Female, 20 and older, upper and middle class.

Small Sound effects (Non digetic sound for film)

These are all the small sound effects that I want to include in my movie. I feel these are what I need to make the film come to life.


This was chosen as in the film we show a close up of a alarm clock. I had to get sound for it as it wasn't working so picking this will just make it look more real and professional.


This sound will be used when Jack is running with his chair to the glass wall to get Harry. I thought using this will bring the comedy element out of my film as two of our aims are to make the target audience laugh and enjoy it. At this time Jack will know that Harry stuck him to the chair and so will be angry which will match the sound as it is someone yelling. 



I wanted to use this sound when Jack is running with the chair and runs into the clear tape. I think this would work because I have to show that the pranks are actually working and this will help by good sound effrects in each prank. When Jack hits the clear tape he then falls down which I believe will make the audience laugh because of the prank and his reaction.
Not Sure About
This is a sound I got from the website soundbibles. I chose this sound and wanted it to be Harrys' reaction shot from the glass wall.
I thought this may work but the audience may not understand it and so leaving it under the title not sure about. During this Harry will be pulling funny faces so I want the audience reactions to be laughing.

Other sounds
Other sounds that I managed to get are door closing, opening and a banana slip from freefx and soudbibles. I wanted to use these to bring my film to life and make it more interesting. The banana slip sound effect is again picked as a funny element of the film and if it works then I feel that my job in the group was relevant.

Feedback on sound

1)Emotional/Ideas(Harry squirted water - idea thought)
Although I liked this sound the feedback from my group wasn't that good. They said that they don't know if it will work and will be a risk. The drum beat is what spoils it for them and they said they will prefer if I found or made a better beat instead. I had a back up which is called 'Emotional Drift 2' taken from the audiolgfl website.

2)Opening-(Harry waking up)
This sound had positive feedback from my group and others. They said it sounded really good and that they can imagine it in the type of film i'm making. This made me feel good as one of my sounds I created could be used. People outside my group said they can imagine hearing it in a opening of a film and my group said that it builds up the character in who the audience will see.


3)Action Hero(Harry gains confidence)
Out of everything this one received the best feedback and most people laughed to it including the teacher. They said that if I include it then there is a huge possibility that our film will be successful. I didn't need to think of any back up song because of its reputation and because I tested it in its prt in the film and it looked real and worked.

4)Caribbean Jive(Reaction song)
This song was taken from audiolgfgl just like Action Hero. This received positive feedback from people outside my group but not from my group itself. The reason my group didn't like it is because they didn't feel it will work. After testing it on the part of the film I saw that it didn't work to because of the facial expression our character Harry was pulling.

5)Harry setting pranks
Another made by me and supposed to be used when Harry is setting up the pranks. This sound gained mixed feedbacks from everyone but wouldn't feature in the film as the part it was going to be with isn't in the film anymore.

5)Backup  - Good feedback due to the jumpy beat and my group thought it suits the type of genre of the film and the audience may bop their head to it.

Jack yelling- Really funny and should work

Continuity

As well as doing sound, I am also in charge of Continuity. To be honest I am not a fan of continuity and didn't actually want to do it but I got prepared so that my mistakes wouldn't be costly. I managed to watch a lesson about it from Youtube which is below.




From this film I know that continuity is a big issue and that I need to be watching everything to make sure everything goes well. 180 degree rule is also important. If I don't use it correctly I could fail my task.
 
I also managed to watch Movie Mistakes on BBC and learn't that I need to keep a close eye on props/objects to make sure they are in their correct positions in the next shot, same lighting etc. I will need guidance from my director to achieve all of this though.
 
What I am hoping to gain from doing Continuity is keeping an close eyeon everything to make sure it's fine. Even though I feel it will be hard for me. The most I could do is my best.

Long Sound effects (Non Digetic sound for film)

For my A2 Media coursework, we are to make a 5minute film. As well as doing continuity and being assistant Director, I am also in charge of sound. Below are some music soundtracks that I have made as well as taken.

1)

This sound was made by me in the music room. I decided to use this bit during when Harry gets squirted water at, community service, flashback until he gets an idea. It starts of very slowly which will represent the mood of Harry as he is really upset and annoyed. At this point the audience will feel sympathy for him. He then sees the prank magazine, smiles, looks at camera showing he has an idea. As the theme continues you will hear a change in sound and tempo first going fast and slowing when he gets the idea. 




2)

This sound was also made by me and planning to use it in the opening sequence when Harry wakes up and getting ready to go to school. During this scene we will not show his face but just his costume and set of his bedroom to make the audience guess what type of character Harry is. I believe this theme will work because it is pop/rock which are music associated with geeks. It also build up the scne with the drum noise


  This one wasn't made by me but chosen becasue it represents the character development of Harry. It is a very serious and fierce sound which goes with the name. I wil like to include this when Harry comes to school the next day feeling more confident to stand up to the bully. I believe It will match this part of the film because it shows a new side of him. It is also very different to the sound i want to use in the opening to represent Harry as a geek. 3)

I got this one from the same website as the one above called audio lgfl. This is planned to be used in the reaction shot when Harry sees one of his pranks has worked. In this shot Harry will be dancing. I feel this will make our audience laugh which is one of my aims so it will be great. It will match Harrys personality because he is very old school and doesn't know any music so him dancing to this track will make him look even more of a geek.

5)
This one was made by me and I chose to use it as a 1st choice for when Harry is setting up the pranks. This is because it builds up the a scene and a sense that something it going to happen. This part of the film is supposed to keep the audience more focused which is because Harry is making something to destroy Jacks confidence and the audience will need to see what Harry is going to do to make it happen. That is why I chose to use sound in this part, in particular this one.

Unlike the one above I didn'tmake this one and so chose to put it as a back up just in case of anything. I chose to pick this sound amongst others because of its fun and uplifting beat. Like I said earlier I will need to keep the audience engaged at this point so using a fun and uplifting beat will keep them awake and watching.6)

Script

Script (Self-Defence)


Scene 1: Opening Bedroom
It is morning and our main character HARRY is getting ready for school. We show the alarm clock goes off and his hand pressing the clocks, then we show our character getting ready for college. Through is costume the audience will be able to detect that he is most likely a “geek” as his costume represents the stereotypical image of nerds e.g. ties, braces and dotted shirts.

The identity of our character is kept a mystery as we do not show or reveal his face – all the audience can see is his costume and body. (Soundtrack). Then we switch location and HARRY is on his way to school, we do not show his journey – all we show is the school playground via an establishing shot. While HARRY is walking through the playground he then trips over his shoelaces – this then gains attention from his bullies as the camera focuses on them.

All in all HARRY finally enters the building and walks into class with a gloomy look. A few minutes later we see other footsteps rushing in to class. Then the door slams to represent that class has started and we show the school bell ringing which indicates that school has started.


Scene 2: MEDIA BLOCK
Suddenly, we see our protagonist run out of class in a fright, and straight after him we see the two bullies which the audience was introduced to in the beginning catch up with him. They then grab him up against the wall and pour water all down his hair and mess it up (they then peanut him and do other bullying-like things) then walk away jokily.

HARRY is upset and emotional over this trauma he has just experimented so goes off to apply for community service as he has no friends to confide in him. (Present this by a hand giving him the “community service” card)

As HARRY is doing his community service he begins to draw and include all the terrible things that have ever occurred in his life.

As HARRY is drawing the only things that he seems to draw are in regards to JACK, with this thought he gets frustrated and pushes a chair into the cupboard without thought. Exactly soon after this happens everything on top of the cupboard falls unto the floor.


Scene 3: Media Office Coincidently a magazine about pranks and jokes falls down on to the table that HARRY is sitting on

HARRY then reminisces what happened to him earlier this morning with JACK and gets angry, he then looks down and sees the magazine which is filled with pranks and jokes.

Harry then turns to audience (camera) and has a smirk on his face to show he has an idea.


Scene 4: Community Service Room
Later on, on that day HARRY begins to go through the magazine and sees all the funny pranks that are included in the magazine.

In relation to this HARRY then hatches a cunning plan to seek revenge on JACK by producing a series of pranks. HARRY then lists the pranks as followed:

Puts Superglue on the chair that JACK will be sitting on.

Slippery liquid outside floor of classroom, so when JACK finally gets of his chair he will fall over).

Place clear tape across the outside of a door from top to bottom

He then runs out frantically through the classroom (media room) corridor.



Scene 5: School
The next day HARRY comes into school, with a new personality. JACK is still very angry with what happened to him yesterday and happy slaps HARRY to gain his authority back.

But HARRY does not take it lightly, when JACK turns around HARRY pushes him down to the floor, giving JACK the macho look, and we now see the reverse of character personality - now HARRY has found his identity, and as he walks off JACK is left on the floor representing him as the weaker character and HARRY gaining status.

Main Characters

HARRY: Protagonist - This is the character who gets bullied by Jack and gets revenge on Jack due to he has had enough of it and wants to show Jack that he is not a wimp.

JACK: Antagonist - This is the bully in the film who picks on Harry all the time but soon gets pay back and because the victim instead.

Harry -  Played by Edward Obeng.
Jack - Played by me due to we can't  get any students of schedule and everyone outside school is to busy.
Teacher - Played by Joshua Freeland

Extras: played by school kids walking past.

Casting Issues
For the film I was told that the people we could use are students who do A2 Media Studies in Barking Abbey or people from outside of the school, but we can't use people in school as they will be in lessons.

This was an issue for my group because we had planned to use our friends in school who don't do Media which was because they fit in our characters and we could see some of them acting very well in their role. All of the people we knew from outside of school were busy in their schools or working so we couldn't use anyone from outside.

The other problem was that the other A2 Media class has only one boy while in our film the two characters are boys. What made things even worse was that Edward (the boy in the other class) is quiet and he has told me already that he hates acting.

At the end of the day there isn't anything we can do so he accepted to be in our film and we asked our teacher if I could be in the film and she accepted it as long as I am the bully because I can't be the main character which is Harry.

Hopefully things will go according to plan after this and our film will go well.

Self Defense Treatment 5th Draft

Tagline: Geeks are bullies to.


HARRY is a little, meek boy that is experiencing bullying by the top guy JACK. HARRY is too ashamed to tell anyone so he keeps it to himself. But today is the day he decides to seek revenge on JACK.




Exposition:
• We see Harry getting ready for school and getting there.

• HARRY walks into school with a happy mood like always, keeping himself to himself, whereas everyone else is entering the school gates with their friends.

• HARRY then sees JACK while entering his class and has a sick feeling and a sense of fear on his face.



Development:

• An hour goes by and the school bell rings, symbolizing that class is over, you hear see two boys run out laughing and pointing and run away.

• HARRY gets squirted water at by Jack and comes out the class soaked with water. People walk past (preferably girls) walk past and point and laugh.

• HARRY gets angry and sad that he has no-one to confide in then runs off the scene.

• HARRY then tries to take things off of his mind, and offers to do community service. (Present this by a hand giving him the “community service” card)

• As HARRY is doing his community service he begins to draw and include all the terrible things that has ever occurred in his life.

• As HARRY is drawing the only things that he seems to draw are in regards to JACK, with this though he gets frustrated and pushes his chair into the cupboard without thought.

• Exactly after this happens everything untop of the cupboard falls unto the floor.




Complication:

•Coincidently a magazine about pranks and jokes falls down in front of Harry

•HARRY then has a quick flashback of what had happened first period with JACK.



Climax:

• Later on, on that day HARRY begins to go through the magazine and sees all the funny pranks that are included in the magazine.

• In relation to this HARRY then hatches a cunning plan to seek revenge on JACK by producing a Prank. HARRY then writes them all down in this specific order listed below:


1) Put Superglue on the chair that JACK will be sitting on.

2) Slippery liquid outside floor of classroom (As everyone would have left Baba puts slippery liquid on the floor outside classroom so when JACK finally gets of his chair he will fall over).

3) Place clear tape across the outside of a door from top to bottom (JACK will run into it as he is in a hurry to get home).
4) He then runs out frantically through the media corridor.


Resolution:

• The next day HARRY comes into school, with a new personality. JACK is still very angry with what happened to him yesterday and happy slaps HARRY to gain his authority back.

School Bag

Braces and Glaasses: This is so that our character follows the codes and conventions of geek characters in films.

Water Gun: We chose to use a water gun to provide the comedy and action in to the film. This will keep our target audience engaged.

 
Magazines: This will used in one of our plot points in which Harry gets his prank ideas from.


Alarm Clock


 
Super glue, clear tape, slippery liquid: These are the pranks that will be used on the Antagoinst Jack. We chose to use these props with the pranks because we want to appeal to a mass audiecne.

Letters/Drawing: This our the actions that our Protagonist Harry will be doing to clear his mind after getting squirted by Jack.
